I think Western Civilization as a whole has a problem with submission. We are taught from a very young age to strive to be the leader and the boss. In reality, this view is contrary to the very heart of Christianity.
The model of submission can be found in the life of Jesus. Paul in Philippians 2:5-8 describes Jesus in these terms:
5. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6. who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7.but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and
coming in the likeness of men. 8. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became
obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
Jesus “made Himself” or as the Amplified version says “stripped Himself of all privilege and rightful dignity”. Such an important distinction. Jesus was not forced to die for us. He made Himself human and fragile and mortal. In verse 8 in the Amplified, it says “He abased and humbled Himself still further” and submitted to death on a cross.
Satan quoted Psalms 91 as he tempted Jesus in the wilderness. Luke 4:9b-11:
9. If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,’11. and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
Even as a man, Jesus had the army of God at His disposal to put a stop to the beating and mocking and spitting but, chose to endure these things and a brutal death on our sake.
Humility, Submission and Obedience should be the mark of a follower of Christ. How can we do anything other to bow down to our Savior, our Lord, and our King.
Be Blessed
