Faith of our Fathers

I have been watching several documentaries on the early Church.  It’s been illuminating.  There are many reasons I began looking at this.  It began with my interest in the Jewish roots of Christianity.  I read Romans 11:17-21:

And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.” Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either.

And also Galatians 3:29

And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

At church, we studies the Feasts of Israel.

Leviticus 23:1,2 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘The feasts of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are My feasts.

There are so many nuggets too long hidden in the Feasts.  There was the wealth of sensory stimulation of the ceremonies of the Feasts. The association of the Passover Feast celebrated by Jesus and the Lord’s Supper.  The fact that these feasts were often celebrated in the home.

Then I pondered if the lost connection between Christianity and Old Testament have hurt us as a Body.  The Old Testament figures of faith are mentioned in James 2 as examples of how our faith in God should be evident in our sacrificial trust and obedience. Are we pouring these stories into our children as more that tales? Are they merely tall tales of thing long past and irrelevant.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.  You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 11:18-21 “Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.  You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.  And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,  that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, like the days of the heavens above the earth.

Did we forget this?  How can we turn our hearts and the hearts of our children back to the Lord?

    • I did not mention it, but it’s on my mind as well. I find it interesting that we all all Christianity, Judaism, Islam claim to be heirs to the covenant of Abraham. I’m reality all of humanity has access to that covenant. Through Jesus, God seeks us all.

This is a good question. Can you elaborate or give your thoughts on your question.

    • I guess I’m trying to figure it out. It’s been an almost 5 year journey for me knowing about God to knowing Him. So this is a continuation of that process. With me not getting any younger and world not getting any better, leaving a heritage of faith for my children and grandchildren is often on my mind.

      • The question is how to preserve it. These days people follow the politically correct more than God. Most state that god is not real because if how the world is.

      • I agree and kinda goes along with my point. I believe that radical faith can change the world. It can save those who would be saved. I feel like, and I believe the Bible teaches, we must look different and sound different from the world around us.
